Patriotism is No Hee Haw

Patriotism is No Hee Haw

The Club entered another overtly political and patriotic float in 1970 and captured second place with the theme, “Patriotism is No Hee Haw.” All club members and their wives dressed as characters from the then popular television program, “Hee Haw,” and made music while sitting on hay bales under the shade of the red and white striped barn structure, which was built atop the hay wagon. Lyrics from Merle Haggard's “Okie from Mukogee” like “We don't take trips on LSD”, “We Still Wave Old Glory at the Court House” and “We don't burn our Draft Cards on Main Street” appeared in bold letters on the sides and back of the barn announcing the Club's response to the social unrest of the times.
